Depression

Depression can affect people in many different ways. It isn't simply a case of feeling sad. It can affect how you think, feel, and experience everyday life, sometimes making even the simplest tasks feel difficult.

You may feel exhausted, disconnected, numb, hopeless, or as though you're carrying a weight that nobody else can see. Things you once enjoyed may no longer bring pleasure, and it can become harder to find motivation, energy or meaning in everyday activities.

Depression can develop gradually or appear following difficult life experiences, loss, stress, trauma, or significant changes in life circumstances. Sometimes there is a clear reason for how you're feeling, and sometimes there isn't.

Whatever your experience, you don't have to face it alone.

You may recognise some of the following:

  • Feeling low or sad for long periods.
  • Losing interest in things you once enjoyed.
  • Feeling exhausted or lacking energy.
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
  • Changes in sleep or appetite.
  • Feeling disconnected from others.
  • Withdrawing from friends or family.
  • Feeling hopeless about the future.
  • Being overly self-critical.
  • Feeling numb or emotionally flat.

How counselling can help

Counselling provides a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what you're experiencing.

My approach is primarily person-centred, which means you are met with understanding, empathy and acceptance. We work at your pace, exploring your thoughts, feelings and experiences without pressure or judgement.

Together, we can begin to make sense of what you're going through, understand the impact it is having on your life, and explore ways of moving forward that feel right for you.

Where it feels helpful, and with your agreement, I may also draw on gentle CBT-based techniques to support you in managing difficult thoughts and developing practical ways of coping.

Depression can make it difficult to believe that things will improve, but support is available. You don't have to carry this on your own.
